Understanding The Millennial Home

Millennial Home KitchenFor years, consumer buying power and purchasing trends have focused around baby boomers. However, within the past several years, the spotlight has shifted to the 80-plus million Americans between the ages of 25 and 34 known as millennials. Now the largest demographic group in history, this generation is undoubtedly the most studied. Significant research findings, speculations and predictions about shopping habits and motivators are driving the world to cater to this influential group.

Home ownership is one example. Many speculate millennials aren’t interested in, or in a position to buy a home because they’re strapped with student loans and a tightened job market. While much of that is true, research paints a different overall picture. In fact, in many U.S. cities, millennials make up half or more of home purchasers (many of them first-time home buyers), according to a recent study by Realtor.com and reported by Bloomberg.

So what are millennials looking for in their home? According to the recent Responsive Home initiative conducted by Builder Magazine, TRI Pointe Group (Pardee Homes) and partners such as Danze, Inc., several priorities rose to the top of their “must have” list when purchasing or building a home:

* Ability to maximize all spaces within the home (efficient, creative storage).

* Urban conveniences in suburban settings (able to walk to parks and schools).

* Plentiful outdoor space, including an outdoor kitchen when possible.

* Customizable floor plans (i.e., ability to have a nanny or mother-in-law suite with kitchenette and more).

* Elements with high design that offer functionality and value.

“There’s no doubt this generation is very design savvy and has outstanding taste,” says Sharon Overby, vice president of Danze, Inc. “We were excited to be part of the Responsive Home project. Our kithome inspection dallas, dallas home inspectors, how to become a home inspector in texas, home inspectors dallas, texas home inspection, home inspectors fort worth texas, dallas home inspections, dallas home inspection, home inspections dallas, home inspector dallaschen and bath faucets, shower systems, bath accessories and others play well with the design-functionality-value ratio.”.

Among the unique design aspects was the use of satin black as a finish throug
hout many of the bathrooms. Showerheads, faucets and accessories were often mounted on white subway tile (grouted in black) for a fun, impactful style.

In one of the kitchens, Responsive Home Creative Director Bobby Berk paired a white farmhouse sink with a Danze
pull-down faucet in a tumbled bronze finish. The juxtaposition of mixing and matching elements such as these are at the heart of millennial style.

Outdoor living has proven to be a hot button for many buyers, including these 25-34-year-olds. The Responsive Home project featured unique use of outdoor space that showcased sunken sitting areas surrounded by beautiful gardens and water features, various applications of large-screen TVs and, of course, fully functional beautiful outdoor kitchens.

“The Danze line is a great match for this set of home buyers, whether they’re building new or fixing up an existing home,” adds Overby. “We’ve proven that eye-catching design and value-focused pricing can co-exist in kitchen and bath products, which are often a big aspect to the personality and style of a home.”.

Spring Cleaning

7 Steps To Allergy Relief With Spring Cleaning

Spring CleaningLonging for allergy relief? To stop the endless cycle of sniffles, sneezes and wheezes, it’s time to ready your vacuum and rubber gloves. Spring cleaning helps eliminate allergens so you can relax, breathe easy and enjoy the season.

“People who suffer from allergies may not realize there’s a direct connection between cleaning your home and reducing allergy symptoms,” says allergist Bryan Martin, DO, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI.) “The more you can rid your home of dust mites, mold, cockroaches and pet dander, the easier you’ll breathe.”

ACAAI recommends seven spring cleaning steps to remove allergens in the home and avoid accidentally letting more in.

Step 1: To sleep, perchance to dream – and breathe.

Start in the bedroom where you spend eight to 10 hours a day. Dust mites can flourish during cold, dreary months, so wash your sheets and comforter regularly. Most mites die by drowning, but if you want to use hot water (which will kill slightly more mites) don’t use water that’s over 120 F because it can scald.

Remember to also wash decorative pillows. Finish by adding allergy-proof casings to the mattress, box spring and pillows. Keep pets out of the bedroom as their dander can cause symptoms to flare.

Step 2: Gaze out, but don’t open.

Window treatments are a magnet for dust and allergens. Pull them down and dry clean, or vacuum each thoroughly. Don’t forget to vacuum blinds and windowsills as well. Tempted to open the windows to let the spring breeze in? Don’t. Unwanted pollen can enter your home and spread everywhere.

Step 3: When the dust settles, wipe it off.

Suit up to win the war on dust by wearing protective gloves and a face mask so you don’t breathe in microscopic mold spores. Next, ditch cotton cloths and feather dusters that kick up allergens, and instead use microfiber cleaning cloths which trap and remove triggers. Wipe down all surfaces including picture frames, knickknacks, and plant saucers and ceiling fans.

Step 4: Nature abhors a vacuum. You shouldn’t.

Move all furniture, and vacuum the dust and dander that collects underneath. Use a cyclonic vacuum, which spins dust and dirt away from the floor, or a vacuum with a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter. Additionally, clean vents and return registers to limit dust recirculating. Consider shampooing carpets to remove deeply embedded allergens.

 Step 5: Scrub-a-dub the mold.

In bathrooms, basements and tiled spaces, scrub any visible mold and mildew from surfaces with bleach, or borax mixed with water, then dry completely. The key to reducing mold is moisture control, so use bathroom fans and clean any standing water immediately. You can also help ward off mold by keeping home humidity below 50 percent.home inspection dallas, dallas home inspectors, how to become a home inspector in texas, home inspectors dallas, texas home inspection, home inspectors fort worth texas, dallas home inspections, dallas home inspection, home inspections dallas, home inspector dallas

Step 6: Change is good – for filters.

Keep the air that circulates through your home’s ventilation system clean by using filters with a MERV rating of 11 or 12. Change the filter at the change of every season, or every three months. (Set a calendar reminder to remember). Additionally, change filters in HEPA appliances. This helps eliminate allergens, and prohibits mold growth.

Step 7: Get out! And about.

Check your home’s exterior for any concerns that may have emerged due to cold weather. Chipped paint, roof damage or cracked siding can lead to mold problems. Make repairs as necessary.

These seven spring cleaning steps may take a few weekends to complete, but they’ll help reduce allergens all season long. For more information, or to find an allergist in your area, visit AllergyAndAsthmaRelief.org.

Office Organization Tips

10 Office Organization Tips To Boost Productivity

Office Organization TipsEmpty boxes, piles of paper, pens strewn about – everyone is guilty of office disorganization. What most people don’t realize is a messy, disheveled office space can actually dramatically reduce worker efficiency and productivity.

A staggering 98 percent of office workers say they ‘d be more productive at their jobs if their offices were more organized, according to a 2015 Post-it Brand Office Organization study surveying 1,000 full-time office workers. That means it’s time to get organized and these 10 simple ideas will help you tidy up your work area and stay on-task for good.

Reduce and recycle

Go through drawers and get rid of paperwork and supplies you never use. Recycle paperwork and give unused supplies to coworkers or donate them to your community’s schools. If you’re never going to use these things, they’re just taking up valuable space.

Keep supplies stocked

Ninety-four percent of office workers are less productive when they don’t have all the supplies they need to work. Order necessary supplies like Post-it Notes, flags, tabs, daily planners, professional notebooks and pens. Then, put colored flags on the calendar to mark when you need to re-order supplies so you’re never without the necessities.

Rethink your desktop

A clean desktop is essential to productivity, however many people are guilty of having their desk covered with unnecessary items. If you don’t use it weekly, find another place for it. That means unused folders, staplers, tape dispensers, and the like can go in a drawer.

An office supply staple

Despite the rise of the digital office, Post-it Notes are still an office staple. On average, office workers use 30 Post-it Notes per week. Keep these handy note pads close by so you can easily use them to mark paperwork or write your coworker a note of encouragement.

Corral pens

Pens and other office extras like scissors, letter openers and highlighters look tidy when placed in a jar on your desk. A big jar can hold everything or use smaller jars to sort each item into its own container. Clear glass jars makes it easy to see what’s inside.

Think vertically

If you’re short on desktop space, think vertically. Walls provide ample opportunity for unique storage. One stylish and affordable option is to cut a peg board and place it in an open frame. This eye-catching wall hanging allows for easy access to office essentials.

Write it down

Sixty-two percent of office workers prefer to manage their to-do list on a piece of paper rather than a computer or home inspection dallas, dallas home inspectors, how to become a home inspector in texas, home inspectors dallas, texas home inspection, home inspectors fort worth texas, dallas home inspections, dallas home inspection, home inspections dallas, home inspector dallasdigital device. Write your task list on a Post-it Super Sticky Note and place it somewhere you’ll see it, such as the edge of your computer monitor or the front of your notebook. This visual reminder will keep you on-task throughout the day.

Don’t sweat the small stuff

At a loss for how to organize paper clips, tacks and other small office items? Small tins are a great way to sort and store these office odds and ends. Place them in drawers so they are out of sight.

Systemize folders

Tackle that pile of folders in the corner and create a simple organizational system using Post-it Tabs. Color code the folders based on your work responsibilities so each tab color is tied to a specific task or status of a project.

Cut cord chaos

Are you always digging under your desk for the right cord? Black binder clips typically used to hold paperwork together are also great for organizing USB, cell phone chargers and other cables. Clip to the side of your desk and thread the chord through the metal to eliminate tangles.

Cypress

Explore The Possibilities With Cypress

CypressInspired by popular home-improvement television shows and information-rich social networks, homeowners and savvy design professionals are using natural materials like cypress to transform their creative aspirations into beautifully tangible realities.

“Cypress is a versatile wood that offers design freedom, lasting performance, and a lifetime of good looks,” says Linwood Truitt of the Southern Cypress Manufacturers Association (www.CypressInfo.org). “Regardless of a home’s architectural style, the color variation and richness of cypress offers a unique look that is guaranteed to enhance any home, anywhere.”.

So, how is cypress being used to build today’s dream homes?

Designers create inviting spaces.

While cypress is typically used for exterior applications – siding, decking, and covered porches – home-improvement experts are bringing cypress’ warmth and charm indoors.

Renowned carpenter and TV host Ty Pennington prominently featured cypress ceilings and trim in his most recent project, the “First to the Future Home” with NextGen Home TV. The truly next-generation home shows how to combine traditional materials, such as cypress, with the latest products and technologies.

“It can really stand the test of time,” Pennington says. “That natural color with that natural grain, you can only get from cypress, which you got to say looks awfully nice.”.

Paul Barnett, president and executive producer of NGHTV.com, said the team selected cypress for the project because of its good looks and lasting performance.

“There’s something special about the look and feel of wood that makes it appeal to homeowners probably more so than any other material,” he says. “What sets cypress apart is its rich grain, natural durability and flexibility with choosing a finish.”.

The finishing touch.

For interior applications, cypress readily accepts a variety of finishes, including paints and stains. However, many homeowners and design professionals select cypress for the appeal of its honey-like hues and the richness of its grain, which can be preserved by applying a clear sealer or transparent stain. Regardless of the desired finish, cypress will provide timeless beauty to complement any design scheme.

To select the best finish, consult a local building products retailer or paint supplier and strictly follow the directions and recommendations provided by the product manufacturer.

Architects side with cypress.

For centuries, cypress has been the wood of choice for exterior applications where longevity and good looks really count. In addition to siding and decking, cypress serves a myriad of applications, including shingles and shakes, home inspection dallas, dallas home inspectors, how to become a home inspector in texas, home inspectors dallas, texas home inspection, home inspectors fort worth texas, dallas home inspections, dallas home inspection, home inspections dallas, home inspector dallasexterior trim, shutters, fencing and fence posts, window boxes, furniture, landscape design elements and other outdoor essentials.

And while cypress offers undeniable beauty, architect Greg Mella, Washington, D.C., says durability is one of the main reasons it continues to be a go-to product.

“Cypress’ heartwood contains a naturally occurring preservative oil called cypressene, which makes it resistant to rot, decay and bugs,” he explains. “A lot of the wood that’s typically used for projects outside the home is treated with chemical preservatives to help it maintain its resistances, but these chemicals have an environmental impact that’s commonly overlooked. Many designers select cypress, because it provides a natural solution to these issues.”.

Explore the possibilities.

Before beginning your next home-improvement project, browse the photo gallery at www.CypressInfo.org and be inspired. Because when it comes to selecting a product based on its versatility, durability, and good looks, cypress is hard to beat.

2016 Kitchen Design Trends

These 2016 Kitchen Design Trends Are On Track To Become Timeless

home inspection dallas, dallas home inspectors, how to become a home inspector in texas, home inspectors dallas, texas home inspection, home inspectors fort worth texas, dallas home inspections, dallas home inspection, home inspections dallas, home inspector dallasSome kitchen design trends fade as quickly as they come in – tile countertops, naked windows or avocado-hued appliances may come to mind. Other trends, however, are so deeply rooted in good design that they’re destined to become timeless style statements – and enhance your kitchen with a look you’ll love as much in a decade as you do the first moment you see it.

Those are the trends homeowners should watch for in 2016 and incorporate into their kitchen upgrade plans, says stylist and designer Emily Henderson, season five winner of HGTV’s “Design Star.” Given nearly nine in 10 homeowners plan to renovate their homes in the near future with half of them planning to do so within the next year, according to a survey by LG Electronics, being armed with the right information will help make those renovations a success.

“Timeless design has an enduring aesthetic that seamlessly complements a range of infinite kitchen styles and colors,” Henderson notes. “They create looks and enhance functionality in ways that will pay off for homeowners for years to come.”.

Henderson points to five design trends to watch in 2016:.

  • Open it up.

Areas that seem small or cramped have never been a staple in homes. Look for design enhancements that create a more open atmosphere, like open shelving or glass-front cabinets, which appear contemporary, sleek and functional. Open storage encourages organization, cuts clutter and eliminates chaos since the contents are always on display. They also provide a great way for homeowners to display their pretty dishware, Henderson notes.

  • Stainless steel revamp.

Stainless steel appliances have long been the standard of elegance in modern kitchens. “It’s hard to imagine improving on such near-perfection, but LG Electronics’ new Black Stainless Steel Series of appliances have done just that,” Henderson says. The new finish from LG adds luster and warmth to the satin-smooth finish and durability of traditional stainless steel. The effect is warm and sophisticated, meshing perfectly with a range of kitchen design styles and colors. “It only helps that the finish is smudge-resistant, which is perfect for a mom like me who likes to keep things clean and pretty, especially with little ones around,” Henderson notes.

  • Let your personality shine.

Modern designs and the sheer number of home décor products make it easier than ever to personalize virtually any design theme. You can add a dash of your personality to your kitchen decor in many ways. Use decorative accents on counters and focus on underscoring a theme you love in the rest of the house, for instance. A lived-in look with touches of style adds life to the space. “I love vintage salt and pepper shakers, brass or wooden utensils, glass canisters, wooden bowls, enamel pots and even vintage cookbooks,” Henderson says. “You can find so many ways to add personal flair to a design, and it’s a sensibility that will never go out of style.”.

  • Contrast is good.

Some combinations will always be on trend, and Henderson predicts more of them will be showing up in kitchen design in 2016. “Black and white, metallics like brass, gold or copper paired with natural and wooden touches – these combos will never tire,” she says. “They can be used alone or in combination with other elements. You really can’t go wrong with any of them.”.

In celebration of 2016 design trends, you have a chance to win a suite of LG Black Stainless Steel Series kitchen appliances, $25,000 and a design consultation with Henderson to completely make over your kitchen. Now through Jan. 29, 2016, create your own kitchen design Pinterest board inspired by the black stainless steel finish and submit it to the contest. Visit HGTV.com/ LGContest for contest details and how to enter.

No purchase necessary to participate in the contest. The contest is open to legal residents of the 48 contiguous United States and District of Columbia, age 21 or older. Void where prohibited. Contest ends at 5 p.m. EST on Jan. 29, 2016. For full official rules, visit www.hgtv.com/LGcontest. The contest is sponsored by LG Electronics U.S.A., Inc., 1000 Sylvan Ave., Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey 07632.

Greywater Recycling

Tips For Going Green, Saving Green, With Greywater Recycling

Greywater recyclingWater conservation isn’t just for Californians and others who live in dry climates. Although the Golden State’s water woes grabbed headlines last summer, it’s not the only state potentially facing water shortages. Nor is it the only one where conservation-minded homeowners are turning to greywater recycling to reduce water bills and preserve the environment.

Greywater – also called gray water – is all the water that goes down the drain from bathroom sinks, showers, tubs and washing machines. While you wouldn’t want to drink it because it contains traces of dirt, hair and household cleaning products, greywater is safe to use for outdoor irrigation. By rerouting greywater outdoors, you can keep your lawn green and your vegetables growing without increasing your water bill.

“We’re seeing increasing demand for products that facilitate greywater recycling,” says Chris Peterson with Saniflo. The company specializes in above-floor plumbing, including greywater pumping systems and macerating toilet systems for residential and light-commercial applications. “Homeowners are realizing that recycling greywater is an effective way to lower their water bills, meet outdoor water needs and do something good for the environment.”.

What’s more, municipalities and counties in California are blazing trails by rewarding homeowners and businesses that recycle greywater. Many are offering rebates for property owners who use greywater systems to irrigate their landscapes.

While California’s drought conditions have been prolonged and extreme, the state is not alone in being concerned about water consumption. A 2014 study by the U.S. Government Accountability Office found 40 out of 50 state water managers expect shortages in at least part of their states within the next 10 years. States have begun taking a number of steps to improve how they manage water, the GAO said, including enacting conservation measures and creating drought preparedness plans.

“Homeowners who begin recycling greywater now could be well ahead of the curve if and when their states begin requiring water conservation measures,” Peterson says. “Meanwhile, they’ll decrease their water and sewer costs by irrigating with recycled water, rather than fresh.”.

Greywater recycling systems can be installed in homes under construction or existing homes undergoing renovation. In fact, says Peterson, many Saniflo customers who add greywater systems to their homes do so as part of a kitchen or bathroom renovation. “The compact size of our Saniswift pump makes it easy to tuck away inside a cabinet for a kitchen or bathroom sink, a clothes or dishwasher, shower, laundry or bar sink. Like all Saniflo products, you don’t have to open the floor or break concrete to plumb the Saniswift, so it can go virtually anywhere.”.

If you’re interested in greywater recycling for your home, Peterson offers some basic information:.

* Although some areas may allow you to recycle water from kitchen sinks, greywater is typically considered the water that comes from showers, bathroom sinks, dishwashers and clothes washers. Water from toilets is not greywater.

* Experts estimate about 40 to 50 percent of the waste water generated by the typical American home qualifies as greywater and could be recycled.

* Not all greywater is the same. The water from bathtubs, showers and bathroom sinks is relatively cleaner than the water from kitchen sinks, clothes washers and dishwashers, which may contain food scraps and cleaning products. It’s important to choose a greywater filter and pump system that’s made to handle the type of greywater produced by the utility you’re connecting it to.

* In addition to lowering your water and sewer bill when you install a greywater recycling system, you may be eligible for a rebate. Check with your local water utility to see if it offers a rebate in your area.

For more information about water recycling, including greywater recycling, visit the EPA’s water recycling web page. To learn more about greywater pumping systems for the home, including kitchens, laundry rooms and bathrooms, visit www.saniflo.com.

Indoor Air

Indoor Air Can Be Worse Than The Air Outdoors

indoor air clean upHome should be your refuge, the place where you feel safest and can breathe easy. But what if the air inside your home is stuffy, stale or just downright dirty? Poor indoor air quality is common in American households, and if your home has bad air, it could be affecting your health.

Indoor pollutant levels can be significantly higher than outdoor levels, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. What’s more, the EPA notes, because most homes have multiple sources of indoor air pollution, the cumulative effect of all that pollution can lead to health problems. The problems may show up immediately or take years to emerge, the EPA says, and can include respiratory problems, eye and throat irritation, headaches, dizziness and fatigue.

Here are some common sources of indoor air pollution and what you can do to improve the air inside your home:

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

Thousands of products give off VOCs, and the concentration of VOCs can be up to 10 times higher indoors than outside, the EPA says. Inside the home, paint, furniture and cleaning supplies are among the top sources of VOCs.

To reduce the presence of VOCs in your home, choose low- or no-VOC paints for home improvement projects. If you’ve recently purchased furniture or had new carpeting installed, be sure to use good ventilation – open windows and run ventilation fans to help evacuate VOCs. Choose cleansers made from organic formulations, rather than chemicals.

Dust

Dust and dirt in your home don’t just look bad, they can cause respiratory and eye irritation, and make certain conditions – like asthma and allergies – even worse. The “dust” in your home contains a host of irritants besides simple dirt, including animal dander and hair, dust mites, insect debris, pollen, spores and more.

Vacuuming is one of the most effective ways to reduce dust and dirt in your home, but be aware that some vacuums can pull dust off the floor and exhaust it back into the air. Even uprights with HEPA filters can’t capture and retain all pollutants. A central vacuum system can do a better job of removing contaminants from your home.

For example, the NuTone PurePower Series Central Vacuums capture debris and other micro-particles and exhaust them directly outside your home, rather than recirculating dust and dirt back into the indoor air. By eliminating 99.97 percent of micro particles, the central vacuum helps improve indoor air quality. Visit www.nutone.com/purepower.

Fumes

A number of appliances in your home can give off noxious fumes like carbon monoxide, from a malfunctioning gas log fireplace or a kerosene space heater to a faulty central furnace. Depending on the kind of emission, these fumes can cause illness and even be lethal.

To minimize risks, keep all gas appliances in good repair. Have furnaces, heaters and fireplaces inspected at least once a year by a professional and be sure any appliance that burns fuel, such as a gas dryer or stove, properly vents outside the home. Install a carbon monoxide detector in your home; many states, counties and municipalities now require them in new construction.

From installing a central vacuum system and CO detector to avoiding products that produce harmful emissions, you can do a lot to improve the quality of the air inside your home.

The lonely bread basket gets a holiday upgrade when you sprinkle tasty cheese to the top crust of baking bread. Hard cheeses like parmesan, asiago and fontina are good options. Grab your favorite shredded variety of Stella cheese when grocery shopping and you’ll be set for this incredibly simple, yet superbly savory addition to your rolls. Visit www.StellaCheese.com for more cooking inspiration using richly-flavored Italian-style cheeses.

  • Nuts add rich crunch to green bean casserole

Green bean casserole is a holiday staple that is often topped with fried onions. This year think bigger with rich, delectable flavors. Start by making your traditional recipe, but update the topping by using chopped walnuts with crumbled corn bread for a tasty crunch that will garner rave reviews from guests.

  • Tangy romano cheese enhances asparagus

Sautéed asparagus is a colorful addition to any holiday meal. Give the dish an elegant upgrade by sprinkling cooked asparagus with tangy Stella Romano cheese. The sharp, salty cheese mingles with the pungent flavors of the asparagus for a side dish that is as tasty as it is eye-catching. This dish is great with turkey, ham, duck or beef.

  • Turmeric brings out savory notes in vegetables

As one of today’s most talked about spices, a quick dash of turmeric is perfect for adding a little pizazz to classic side dishes. For example, the warm, peppery flavor of turmeric brings out the savory notes of roasted vegetables. It’s also a fantastic addition when sprinkled on braised greens like kale or collards.

  • Gorgonzola adds zip to creamy potatoes

Starches are a must for any holiday meal, but that doesn’t mean you’re stuck with basic mashed. Instantly upgrade your favorite spuds when you add flavorful Stella gorgonzola. The robust flavor of gorgonzola pairs perfectly with white or sweet potatoes. Mash directly into potatoes for a rich, creamy dish or sprinkle on top for a tasty topping like in this sweet potato recipe:

Baked Sweet Potatoes with Cranberry Gorgonzola Gremolata

Makes 6 servings

Ingredients:

6 medium sweet potatoes

1/4 c. melted butter

1/2 tsp. salt

1/4 c. pure maple syrup

1/4 c. minced fresh parsley

1 lemon zested

1 clove garlic, minced finely

3 tablespoons minced pecans

3 tablespoons finely chopped dried cranberries

1 scallion minced

2 ounces Stella gorgonzola, crumbled

Directions:

Preheat oven to 450 F. Place sweet potatoes on cookie sheet and bake for 30 minutes. Flip over and return to oven to bake until tender, about 20 minutes. Remove from oven and set aside.

When cool enough to do so safely, peel sweet potatoes. Place in a medium skillet over low heat with butter, salt and maple syrup for 5 minutes, basting the potatoes with the butter mixture occasionally. Lightly smash the potatoes until there is an even consistency. Hold over low heat.

In a small bowl, toss together parsley, lemon zest, garlic, pecans, cranberries and scallion. Gently fold in the gorgonzola.

Move sweet potatoes to a serving dish and sprinkle with the cranberry blue cheese gremolata. Serve hot.

Combat Holiday Stress

5 Easy Ways To Combat Holiday Stress

combat holiday stressThe holidays should be joyful and relaxing, filled with quality family time, but with all the pressures of gift buying, parties and traveling, you might view the season a bit differently. Whether you’re worried about money, checking everyone off your gift list or sending your holiday cards, it seems there’s never enough time to get everything done.

But the season doesn’t have to bring about feelings of stress and anxiety. When you focus on all the happiness the season brings, you can get back to enjoying what the holidays are all about.

Here are some tips to help you beat the many holiday stressors and enjoy this time of year:

Get organized.

Never underestimate the power of list-making and planning. Use a planner or your phone to keep track of all the tasks and events on your to-do list. Crossing items off as you go will help keep your stress levels in check.

Avoid taking on debt.

Money worries are one of the biggest triggers for holiday stress, but that doesn’t mean you have to go into debt. By planning and sticking to a budget, you can easily avoid spending too much. Decide what you can truly afford given your regular bills and expenses and don’t overlook easy ways to find “hidden” money in unexpected places. Gather all your coins from coat pockets and jars around the house and take them to a Coinstar kiosk where you can convert coins to cash or no fee eGift Cards. Be sure to also check your wallet for gift cards you may never use, because bright yellow Coinstar Exchange kiosks offer instant cash when you sell your gift card and are conveniently located at grocery stores.

Be realistic.

You can only make it to so many parties and events in a given time frame, so don’t overdo it. You don’t have to be the perfect holiday host or please every one of your family members. Instead, focus on the traditions and holiday events that mean the most to you. If family events tend to overwhelm you, remember it’s OK to set a time limit for any event or visit.

Take time for yourself.

Sixty-six percent of holiday shoppers can name at least one thing they’d be willing to do to ensure they can purchase gifts for everyone, including eating out less, spending less on entertainment and taking on credit card debt, according to the Coinstar Holiday Survey conducted by Kelton Research. Try not to take enjoyable activities out of your budget, if you can. Treat yourself to dinner and a movie every now and then to keep yourself sane when the stressors are piling up.

Get active.

Stick to your normal exercise routine and make a point to get out and move. Regular exercise decreases feelings of anxiety, releases endorphins and improves your sleep quality, which are things you could use during the holidays. And even though it may be dark for a large portion of the day, spend a few minutes outside or sit near a window on particularly sunny days.

When you incorporate these tips into your routine, you’ll find it easier to enjoy all the wonderful things that come along with the holiday season. And instead of collapsing in relief at the end of the season, you’ll carry that calm and positive momentum right into the New Year.

Travel Smart With Smartphone

Five Hacks To Travel Smart With Your Smartphone

home inspection dallas, dallas home inspectors, how to become a home inspector in texas, home inspectors dallas, texas home inspection, home inspectors fort worth texas, dallas home inspections, dallas home inspection, home inspections dallas, home inspector dallasWhether you’re traveling solo, as a couple or with your entire extended family, there’s one thing you likely won’t forget to bring on your trip: your smartphone or tablet. Nearly two-thirds of Americans are now smartphone owners, according to the Pew Research Center, and almost half own a tablet. Right next to socks and a toothbrush, your mobile device is one of the most important and useful items you’ll bring with you.

These devices are meant to be mobile and while on the road, our mobile devices help us navigate new places, entertain us during long flights and keep us connected to back home. However, what might throw your trip into a tailspin is the amount of data these devices can consume. Streaming video, photo sharing, travel apps and Internet browsing can eat up data fast and if you don’t have the right data plan you could end up having your trip cost a lot more in overage fees.

And trends show our need for data is growing exponentially. In fact, individual data usage will increase from almost 2 GB used per month in 2014 in North America to almost 11 GB in 2019, according to Cisco’s Mobile Visual Networking Index. The last thing you want to come home to is a huge bill of data overages because you or your child used too much data. To get the most out of your smartphone and tablet without the headaches of low batteries and data charges, consider these expert travel tech tips:

Connect to Wi-Fi whenever possible

One simple proactive step can dramatically decrease your data usage: connect to Wi-Fi. While not always possible, Wi-Fi is widely available at airports, train stations, restaurants and many other public places. If you’re dealing with a delay, connect to the local Wi-Fi network and you can check email, surf the web or shop online until your heart’s content.

Download playlists and movies

Taking a long plane trip or heading out on an epic road trip? Traveling to another country? Download playlists and movies before you leave so your content is ready to go when you’re not able to be connected to a network. You’ll enjoy immediate access to what you want even in airplane mode or without network coverage.

Stream smart

Streaming video and music can use a ton of data so be careful what you choose to watch. T-Mobile recently launched “Binge On” which lets customers enjoy video streaming from top select partners like Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Showtime, ESPN and more without using their high-speed data bucket. That means watching the game, catching up on your favorite series or movies for the kids won’t cost you any data on T-Mobile. And the best part is, it’s automatically included in qualifying plans. T-Mobile also offers a similar program for music streaming as well. Learn more at www.T-Mobile.com.

Ready devices for travel abroad

It’s important to know your plan and ready your devices for traveling to other countries. Call your carrier to make sure you’re covered and avoid outrageous international roaming fees. If you are constant international traveler, check out T-Mobile’s Simple Choice plan, you get LTE data and texting at no extra charge in more than 140 countries. And, as an added bonus, T-Mobile customers traveling to Canada or Mexico, can use their phone just like the US. The company’s Simple Choice plan is one of the best in wireless for people that travel a lot.

Stay charged

Nothing is worse than running out of battery while traveling. Your directions, your entertainment, and some argue, your sanity, are gone! If you’re road tripping, remember to pack a car charger. If you plan to be away from a charging port, an extra battery or portable charger can be a life saver. Only have a few minutes to charge before takeoff? Charge devices faster by switching to “airplane mode” before plugging in.
